Overhead, intense blue sky and uninterrupted sunshine, on the water, searing race action. The polite action that built point-scores over the past 6 months gave way to fierce competition for the real estate between Toxic Haste, manned by Race Committee Gil Gordon and Hugh Mast, and the number 3 buoy at the pin-end of the line in Oceanside Harbor's Outer Basin. With 8.5 knots of steady pressure swinging back and forth from 245* to 305*, the boats were ideally powered for a challenging race day.

Slippery When Wet with Diana and Steve Rhodes opened with one Ace, chased closely by Dan Avina and Shelly in OXO. Danny struck from one point behind Series leaders, Sue Dijkman and Christina Kendrick (Lazlo) and pulled ever so slightly into the overall lead,

Gary Hall and Jim Lackey showed new-found speed in Hulakai, copping the bullet in race 2. Their consistency earned the Third Place Trophy for the day.

Further back in the mix, Roger Shaw's blazing run of Firsts was stifled. Shaw, with Stevy Mast crewing in Don”t Mess With Kitty were relegated to 5th for the day, squashing their assault from the 4 point deficit they had earned earlier in the season.

Last season's Fleet Champion, Larry Rowe and P C Van Slyke struggled in the newly re-rigged Red Tide, swapping blows with It Ain't Pink, handled by Bryan and Teresa Fulgham. Then in race 3 Avina displayed the pomposity of velocity that earned First Place in Oceanside Yacht Club's 2010 Thirsty Thursday Series, claiming a needed win.

Race 4 saw a massive lunge at the Starting Line with enough OCS points to lower the National Debt. The restart featured OXO continuing a prominence of dominance with a victory. Danny punctuated the score-sheet grammar with a Victory Lap in race 5, to claim the right to the Series Title, the Scarlet Letter, and the coveted Van Slyke Perpetual Trophy for the next year.

Back in Oceaside Yacht Club's Regatta Room, Fleet Captain Stevy Mast handed the Fleet keys to the newly elected Danny Avina, who will hold the post of Fleet Captain. Holly Davis (Irish Car Bomb) will assume the care of the Fleet 21 Treasury with it's vast holdings and Larry Rowe (Swift River) was chosen to continue performing the Measurer's duties.

Fleet 21 will participate in OYC's 12 race Thirsty Thursday Series through the Summer Season before beginning the most rigorous competition in North San Diego County this next fall.

Congratulations Capt. Danny.
Little did I realize that nearly 30 years later, I'd be taking the helm at W. D. Schock. This is both an honor and a pleasure. The Company has a rich tradition of building boats which represent the best that life has to offer - family, friends, and fun. What W. D. "Bill" Schock started back in 1958 with the Lido 14 lives on, with Steve Schock's designs for the Harbor line continuing that tradition. The Harbor line boats are a delight to sail and perfect for an outing with friends or family. The quality and attention to detail in these boats result in what I like to think of as connoisseur's boats, the pleasure of owning them increases over time. I will work hard to support the Schock sailors, dealers, and fleets."

Tom elaborated: "Alexander and I have worked closely together for the last 18 months on this transaction. He has become an involved team member in and around the shop leading up to the official 'change of watch' and has watched closely as the new Harbor 30 tooling has come to life. Alexander respects and appreciates the legacy of W. D. Schock Corp.; and he understands the unique aspects of multi-generational family businesses, having himself grown up in a family business which spanned five generations. Jane and I will continue to be involved with the company. Dealers should see more of me in my new Brand Ambassador role, helping to support their efforts. The 6th title will be engraved on the Van Slyke Trophy in May 2011, honoring the Fastest Lido in town. Although several of the most contentious names were absent, several new boats were making their presence felt.

The first windward mark rounding found Gary Hall and Jim Lackey in Hulakai II demonstrating their transom to the fleet. Gary brings as much racing experience to the race course as all the other boats combined. A previous Lido 14 racer, Gary has taken a decades- long sabbatical to race many other boats, most recently his late Catalina 270, Hulakai.

Building on momentum from last year's Champ Series, Diana and Steve Rhodes moved into the passing lane to claim the first shotgun. New Lido Crewman, Grant was aboard Hot Damn, controlling the front half of Jeff Slatterwhite's craft. They found close combat with Brian and Teresa in It's Not Pink. Lido 1497 was bought new in 1961 by Brian's family. It was sold 10ish years ago to a family friend, but was never sailed. A recently rekindled interest in sailing compelled Brian to re-purchase the prodigal sloop, still in perfect un-restored vintage condition.

The Salmon? Mango? Tangerine? Apricot gel-coat IS NOT PINK.

Oceanside Yacht Club's Lido 14 was campaigned by Junior Program Director, Tim Gallagher with the help of Jennifer. New to the Lido 14, they found the gas pedal by the later races, posting a 3rd for the fifth race.

Last Summer's Beercan winner, Danny Avina, arrived with new crew, Sarah, and improved throughout the day's races to claim 3rd for the day in his most recent of several Lidos, OXO.

Last year's Fleet 21 Champion, Larry Rowe, crewed for P C Van Slyke in Red Tide.

Sue Dijkman in Lazlo posted consistently high finishes culminating with a win in the 4th race, 2nd place for the day was the reward.
Buckaroo with Given Harrison and Lou were helped with a 2nd place in Race 1.
The rust and dust gathered in the past couple of idle months were chased off by several jarring contacts during the day.

Gary and Jim gave Hulakai an ad-lib shampoo job after a jibe, complicated by an errant mainsheet snarl. The immediate response of the entire fleet resulted in a quick curtain to the impromptu water ballet. P C, aided by Sarah, righted the turtle and Hulakai was bailed, then delivered to the ramp by James Conner, Jr Commodore of OYC. Passage for the wet crew was arranged by quick acting Lazlo and Buckaroo. “N” flag down. Class Flag Up. Then down. Race 4 was underway.
Diana and Steve punctuated the day's lesson with a race 5 win. Any questions??

Tim Gallagher offered Oceanside Yacht Club's sparkling Harbor View for friendly rules arguments, lies, trophies, and general good time camaraderie. After a practice race on December 5th, the Championships will continue in January 2011 on a date that will be announced soon.

The siege was swift and relentless. The seven Lido 14’s swept in quickly and efficiently, to debrief the action in the December 2009 edition of their monthly race series.. Some of the fiercest sailors to ply Oceanside Harbor showed their hands for the 5 races in Lido 14s…Tim O’Connor, past Fleet 21 Champion, joined ranks with Jeff Satterwhite in Hot Damn, and John Slattebo, past Olympic contender, threw in with Sue Miller in Lazlo. Both teams caused problems for the fleet.

Oceanside’s reputation for mild weather was proven again. 73 degrees…Northwest winds at 6-8 knots…no jet-skis…no bad crashes…hard, close racing all day.

The Fleet used Rabbit Starts, ala the 505 World Championships, to allow all boats to compete.

Given Harrison and Lou Servatka in Buckaroo gave Larry Rowe and P C VanSlyke a dizzying 360 penalty in the close action rounding the windward mark in race 3.

Jack and Margie Bouckeno demonstrated their contingency skills when their forestay shackle let loose, Margie and Jack each took a walk on the foredeck to retrieve sheets and reattach the errant component. Hot-shot OYC Juniors, Slater McArdle and James Connor, tested some new equipment and had decent results to boot..

Fleet 21 Captain, Stevy Mast, dominated the day with the help of Fleet Champion, Hugh Mast.

The Windward/Leeward courses saw a ton of close covering. Downwind, the team close behind got a chance to squat on the wind of the unlucky craft immediately ahead.

The races today were practice for the Oceanside Championship Series, the 20 race contest which will resume January 31, 2010, and wrap up in May, with the awarding of the VanSlyke Perpetual Trophy.Lido Fleet 21Oceansidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00128118927005286318noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-393474163092490450.post-59030074199643816412009-12-18T10:53:00.000-08:002009-12-18T10:53:42.793-08:00Christmas Bunny Regatta

Clairvoyance was not required to know that Oceanside Yacht Club’s dynamic Junior team would have a powerful impact on the outcome of the Fleet 21 season opener. Sunday, September 27th provided the first of the monthly Lido 14 race days of the 2009-2010 season. Slater McCardle and James Conner placed their new Lido 14 in front of the Fleet and only relinquished the position after the finishing horn. With several contests left, the fleet concentrated on these new upstarts. “Don’t Mess With Kitty” with Fleet Captain, Stevy Mast and pirate slave Hugh Mast at the helm, took the gun in the following contest. The 6 races saw 4 different winners, always pushed hard to the finish line. Very stable winds and a Hot Dog shaped course, with a leeward gate, kept the boats in close contact. NO “parade legs.”

Cobwebs were brushed from the boats, sometimes by a competitor, right-of-way rules were revisited. Jack and Margie Buckeno in “A Little Quickie” battled throughout the 6 race series with Jeff Satterwhite and Christina Hendricks (Hot Damn), offering close crossing, rule testing action for the onlookers.

The 5th contest was a trip around the Moaner, Oceanside’s signature course. Jack and Margie paid an intimate visit to the basking seals before heading in to the finish. Given Harrison and Clay led the way, only to fall prey to the devious ways of small-boat tactical guru, Larry Rowe in the final meters of the course. PC VanSlyke, also a Lido skipper, volunteered to fill the vacancy left in Larry’s “Swift River” as Larry’s former crewman James Conner moved into his own new ride.

After the spray settled, all craft returned safely to the end of G-dock for a discussion, illustrated with “little pushy boats.” Refreshments, bragging, and threats of great action in the coming season rounded out the day.

The October event will be a Measurement Clinic. Fleet Measurer, Larry Rowe, will issue National Lido 14 Class Association Measurement Certificates, assuring that the boats are exactly matched, and ready to perform duty in the tightly regulated National Fleet events.
Clairvoyance is not required to see that the Trophy will grace the mantle of a new Winner in this coming Fleet 21 Championship Series.
Fleet 21 launches their 9 month season in about 2 weeks. The September race day is Sunday, the27th. This doesn’t count for the Fleet Championship, just a great opportunity to sharpen your moves and hone your tactics.. We’ll lay out the course at the ramp at the 11:00 skipper’s meeting and start racing at noon. There won’t be a committee, we’ll probably do whistle starts. We can tie up at G Dock after to eat, drink, brag, discuss and push toy boats around to recreate what really happened out there. So bring your boat, crew, questions, ice chest, lunch/snack and let’s have some fun.

October 17th (Saturday) is our measurement clinic at Larry Rowe’s house. Again, bring your boat, food, ice chest, manpower, guitar, questions…We’ll get started at 8:00, (yes, Admiral, 800 hours, yes, A M.) If you have questions, call Larry Rowe.

November __?_ will be the first day of the Championship Series. Throughout the year there will be 4 days, with 5 races each day, and 4 throw-outs. The winner puts a scarlet, I mean RED Letter on her sail and engraves the skipper’s and crew’s name on the Van Slyke Trophy, PLUS keeps the trophy on her mantel until a new champion triumphs. These Championship One-Design races are the premiere competitive sailing events in Oceanside. There will be a committee and trophies, and the closest racing in North County. Let me know what day you would prefer to race in Nov.; Sunday the 8th, 22nd, or 29th, or Saturday the 14th, 21st. or 28th . I’ll keep a tally and we’ll go with the most popular date.
ALL THE TIME.

The early lead launched by Swift River (Larry Rowe, with crew Mike) was countered by Given Harrison and Lou Servatka in Buckaroo. Their run of trophy finishes faced a late challenge by Sue Miller and Marissa Brown In Lazlo, but the numbers had been etched…along with the “1st’ on Given’s overall Thirsty Thursday Series trophy.

Since Jay Davis took a vacation, racing the 70 foot Alchemy to Hawaii , Holly Davis and her brother, Eric, terrorized in Irish Car Bomb, claiming a victory in Race 7. Mike and Mallory Murphy (Murphy’s Law) meted out the justice to the fleet with a win in Race 6.

The intensity extended through the fleet. The 2 newest Lidos were locked in a match series. With eight races in the bag and 4 to go, the final outcome is VERY uncertain. There have been 5 different winners in the past 5 races, with Irish Car Bomb, guided by Holly Davis, taking the last 4 race mini-series. The 2 newest boats, A Little Quickie with Jack and Margie Bouckeno, and Slippery When Wet, skippered by Steve Rhodes and crewed by Joe Lopez, present increasing threats to the leaders.
At the front, Buckaroo, with Given Harrison and Lou Servatka, have amassed the top score, but they are tied by Swift River (Larry Rowe and Mike) when the 3 throw-outs are factored in. Holly Davis, Sue Miller, and Mike and Mallory Murphy have also placed bullets on the scoresheet. Jeff Satterwhite with Amanda (Hot Damn) have a lock on the Lanterne Rouge, since Jeff considers flying Jumbo Jets to be more pressing than his racing schedule.
