The siege was swift and relentless. The seven Lido 14’s swept in quickly and efficiently, to debrief the action in the December 2009 edition of their monthly race series.. Some of the fiercest sailors to ply Oceanside Harbor showed their hands for the 5 races in Lido 14s…Tim O’Connor, past Fleet 21 Champion, joined ranks with Jeff Satterwhite in Hot Damn, and John Slattebo, past Olympic contender, threw in with Sue Miller in Lazlo. Both teams caused problems for the fleet.
Oceanside’s reputation for mild weather was proven again. 73 degrees…Northwest winds at 6-8 knots…no jet-skis…no bad crashes…hard, close racing all day.
The Fleet used Rabbit Starts, ala the 505 World Championships, to allow all boats to compete.
Given Harrison and Lou Servatka in Buckaroo gave Larry Rowe and P C VanSlyke a dizzying 360 penalty in the close action rounding the windward mark in race 3.
Jack and Margie Bouckeno demonstrated their contingency skills when their forestay shackle let loose, Margie and Jack each took a walk on the foredeck to retrieve sheets and reattach the errant component. Hot-shot OYC Juniors, Slater McArdle and James Connor, tested some new equipment and had decent results to boot..
Fleet 21 Captain, Stevy Mast, dominated the day with the help of Fleet Champion, Hugh Mast.
The Windward/Leeward courses saw a ton of close covering. Downwind, the team close behind got a chance to squat on the wind of the unlucky craft immediately ahead.
The races today were practice for the Oceanside Championship Series, the 20 race contest which will resume January 31, 2010, and wrap up in May, with the awarding of the VanSlyke Perpetual Trophy.

Fleet 21 season opener
clair·voy·ance (kler vo̵i′əns)
the ability to perceive things that are not in sight or that cannot be seen
keen perception or insight
Clairvoyance was not required to know that Oceanside Yacht Club’s dynamic Junior team would have a powerful impact on the outcome of the Fleet 21 season opener. Sunday, September 27th provided the first of the monthly Lido 14 race days of the 2009-2010 season. Slater McCardle and James Conner placed their new Lido 14 in front of the Fleet and only relinquished the position after the finishing horn. With several contests left, the fleet concentrated on these new upstarts. “Don’t Mess With Kitty” with Fleet Captain, Stevy Mast and pirate slave Hugh Mast at the helm, took the gun in the following contest. The 6 races saw 4 different winners, always pushed hard to the finish line. Very stable winds and a Hot Dog shaped course, with a leeward gate, kept the boats in close contact. NO “parade legs.”

Cobwebs were brushed from the boats, sometimes by a competitor, right-of-way rules were revisited. Jack and Margie Buckeno in “A Little Quickie” battled throughout the 6 race series with Jeff Satterwhite and Christina Hendricks (Hot Damn), offering close crossing, rule testing action for the onlookers.
The 5th contest was a trip around the Moaner, Oceanside’s signature course. Jack and Margie paid an intimate visit to the basking seals before heading in to the finish. Given Harrison and Clay led the way, only to fall prey to the devious ways of small-boat tactical guru, Larry Rowe in the final meters of the course. PC VanSlyke, also a Lido skipper, volunteered to fill the vacancy left in Larry’s “Swift River” as Larry’s former crewman James Conner moved into his own new ride.
After the spray settled, all craft returned safely to the end of G-dock for a discussion, illustrated with “little pushy boats.” Refreshments, bragging, and threats of great action in the coming season rounded out the day.
The October event will be a Measurement Clinic. Fleet Measurer, Larry Rowe, will issue National Lido 14 Class Association Measurement Certificates, assuring that the boats are exactly matched, and ready to perform duty in the tightly regulated National Fleet events.

Lido Practice Race
Ahoy,
Fleet 21 launches their 9 month season in about 2 weeks. The September race day is Sunday, the27th. This doesn’t count for the Fleet Championship, just a great opportunity to sharpen your moves and hone your tactics.. We’ll lay out the course at the ramp at the 11:00 skipper’s meeting and start racing at noon. There won’t be a committee, we’ll probably do whistle starts. We can tie up at G Dock after to eat, drink, brag, discuss and push toy boats around to recreate what really happened out there. So bring your boat, crew, questions, ice chest, lunch/snack and let’s have some fun.
October 17th (Saturday) is our measurement clinic at Larry Rowe’s house. Again, bring your boat, food, ice chest, manpower, guitar, questions…We’ll get started at 8:00, (yes, Admiral, 800 hours, yes, A M.) If you have questions, call Larry Rowe.
November __?_ will be the first day of the Championship Series. Throughout the year there will be 4 days, with 5 races each day, and 4 throw-outs. The winner puts a scarlet, I mean RED Letter on her sail and engraves the skipper’s and crew’s name on the Van Slyke Trophy, PLUS keeps the trophy on her mantel until a new champion triumphs. These Championship One-Design races are the premiere competitive sailing events in Oceanside. There will be a committee and trophies, and the closest racing in North County. Let me know what day you would prefer to race in Nov.; Sunday the 8th, 22nd, or 29th, or Saturday the 14th, 21st. or 28th . I’ll keep a tally and we’ll go with the most popular date.

Oceanside Yacht Club Thirsty Thursdays Series Results
Melancholy swept over the Outer Basin at Oceanside Harbor , as Oceanside Yacht Club’s Thirsty Thursday series offered it’s final puffs.
Yes, there were the Lasers, Sabots, even a Capri 14, but the Action was ALL LIDO. ALL THE TIME.
The early lead launched by Swift River (Larry Rowe, with crew Mike) was countered by Given Harrison and Lou Servatka in Buckaroo. Their run of trophy finishes faced a late challenge by Sue Miller and Marissa Brown In Lazlo, but the numbers had been etched…along with the “1st’ on Given’s overall Thirsty Thursday Series trophy.
Since Jay Davis took a vacation, racing the 70 foot Alchemy to Hawaii , Holly Davis and her brother, Eric, terrorized in Irish Car Bomb, claiming a victory in Race 7. Mike and Mallory Murphy (Murphy’s Law) meted out the justice to the fleet with a win in Race 6.
The intensity extended through the fleet. The 2 newest Lidos were locked in a match series. Slippery When Wet with Steve Rhodes and Joe Lopez, and Jack and Margie Bouckeno’s A Little Quickie traded introductory sailing lessons without a hint of a “tap out.” Both the boats and the crews were hardened in the saltwater tempering process.
Jeff and Amanda Satterwhite made an appearance in Hot Damn to round out the scoring equation.
Oceanside Harbor has a widespread reputation for a 18:00 vacuum in the blow department, but Race Committee Paul Gadbois and Frank Moulton kept feeding the quarters to the Aeolus Windmaker, and the venue was graced with usable pressure gradients throughout the series. The entire fleet was working the tricky tidal currents by the final races.
OYC wrapped up the event with an Ice Cream Social accompanying the award ceremony.
I can’t wait ‘til next May!
Lido fleet members kicked butt on other boats in the summer series as well. James Conner (Larry Rowe’s crew) won the Laser Class. Stevy Mast survived in the sabot class. Huey Mast dominated the sabots and on his boat, Toxic Haste, he and crew Larry Rowe, Steve Rhodes and Jack Buckeno took home the gold. Sue Miller also crewed on Wednesdays. And did we mention Jay Davis did TRANSPAC!

Thirsty Thursdays Series Oceanside CA
Oceanside Yacht Club has offered a spectacular opportunity for the Lido 14s of Fleet 21, 8 competitors are mixing it up for glass and gold trinkets. With eight races in the bag and 4 to go, the final outcome is VERY uncertain. There have been 5 different winners in the past 5 races, with Irish Car Bomb, guided by Holly Davis, taking the last 4 race mini-series. The 2 newest boats, A Little Quickie with Jack and Margie Bouckeno, and Slippery When Wet, skippered by Steve Rhodes and crewed by Joe Lopez, present increasing threats to the leaders.
At the front, Buckaroo, with Given Harrison and Lou Servatka, have amassed the top score, but they are tied by Swift River (Larry Rowe and Mike) when the 3 throw-outs are factored in. Holly Davis, Sue Miller, and Mike and Mallory Murphy have also placed bullets on the scoresheet. Jeff Satterwhite with Amanda (Hot Damn) have a lock on the Lanterne Rouge, since Jeff considers flying Jumbo Jets to be more pressing than his racing schedule. The final mini-series will start on July 30th, any interested teams should contact the Oceanside Yacht Club office.
